SUPERMARINE  SEAFANG F. 32

The history of the development of aeroplane Seafang Mk 32 ties up with the development and further evolution of aeroplane Spitfire. Seafang became „ the older brother” of the legendary Spitfire. Through the period of the development and construction of the newly made versions of Spitfire. In november 1942  a group of consructors led by Joseph Smith began works on a new, veneerary profile of an aeroplane wing.
When the first project was brought out, Air Ministry set demands concerning a one-seated fighter with a veneerarly profiled wing, where no problems would cause folding wings while hangering on the airport. The new construction was to be named Spitfire. It was also acknowledged that the new construction would be driven by Merlin and Griffen engines- the same as in the Spitfire. Later on the instalation of Merlin’s engine was resigned for the benefis of Griffen.
30 June 1944 Spitfire took its first flight. Nevertheless 13 september 1944 the aeroplane crashed. The examination found a couple of defects, which were successfully corrected. 8 January 1945 the Spitfire NN664 began its flight.
At the same time, when the Spitfire was „born”- the Seafang saw daylight. The differences were: instalating on the Seafang a hook in shape of a „Sting”, folded wings as well as suitable equipment for Marines.
21 April 1945 Air Ministry issued with demands on a one- placed fighter for FAA, what brought later on  other orders for two prototypes: VB893 and VB895.
On the half of 1945 there was an order on 150 copies of Seafang, which were supposed to „patch up” differences in Spitful’s.
On the beginning of January 1946 the first series of Seafang, which was named Mk. 31, set off into the air. It didn’t have folder wings and was driven by a five- shoveled screw.
Also on the beginning of 1946 the prototype of Seafang VB895 was set into air, but was named Mk. 32. This aeroplane had folded wings as well as a hook „Sting”. It was driven by engine Griffon 89 with a backward skrew, a Rotol type.
By the end of may 1947 were held attempts on the HMS Illustrious airport.
From the 150 orders of Seafang copies, only 16 were produced and only 9 were provided.
The model set in this paper-cutting shows a prototype of Seafang VB895.

  THE CONSTRUCTIONS DESCRIPTION

          GENERAL COMMENTS:

Before gluing get familiar with the main plan of the model and assembly drawing. Each assembly drawing forms a complete group of numbered pieces, necessary for workmanship.

Pieces marked by a star- glue on a cardboard with a thickness of about 0 ,8  mm.

Pieces marked by letter „p” glue the same as pieces marked by letter „L”.

We use a rule of matching pieces together „on dry”, try on twice- then glue. Chile gluing the tuselage check the symmetry of its gluingness.

The thickness and length of wires should be picked out, the shape should be performed by the given pattern.

Places not printed, cut curbs, scratches etc. paint with watercolours, or other suitable colours.

The model can be made with movable navigating elements- Draw attention while cutting and matching pieces together.

After gluing the model paint with colourless and half matt varnish to make the construction more resistant from damage and much easier to clean from dust.

BODY

Glue the skeleton of pieces I, Ic, Id. Roll up the cock and glue it to the inside of piece 1 (it’s the place where the calpacks propeller is situated). The ready skeleton glue together with pieces 1 and 3 . In  piece 3 we cut out a space for the bay of exhaust pipes and also other pipes- pieces 3bP. In segment 4 after forming cut the marked space for the later assembly of the bays main landing- gear. Glue segment 5. Glue segment 6, assembling inside it the bay of the cabin- pieces IV a. In the marked place, glue to piece 6. Nextly assemble the bay of the pilot’s cabin. The furnishing glue according to the drawings 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Over the entire model glue piece 7. The dative (drawing 9) glue together and assemble in the marked space according to drawing 4. Segment 24 and 25 glue according to the assembly drawing. In segment 26 glue the skeleton for the later put- up of the wheels as well as the bay enabling the movement of a hook in a lean out position (piece 36). In piece VIII e beat out a hole marked with a symbol of scissors and we fold to the inside the piece of which is to be assembled- the piece of the stabilizer fin- piece 29 (look drawing 12). Form the skeleton with spaces to set piece 30. The stabilizor fin glue on the marked space on drawing 12

Piece 30 can be made in a movable position. The skeleton should be glued in a full model by pieces VIII f and VIII f1. Over pieces IX b and IX c glue ends (looks similar like a shuttle cock-drawing 23). The entire model glue with pieces 30 L,P.

Hook in shape of a „Sting” – glue the skeleton as in drawing 11. If we choose a hook in a movable position you shouldn’t (!) glue permanently in the guide skeleton- piece 36. It should tightly move. The ready element glue in a space marked with nr. 35. Piece 36 should be placed in beated out hole (then the hook will be hidden). If taken out, it should slightly fall down.

Glue the stabilizor fin together . Glue skeleton (pieces XL,P , Xa, Xb, Xc.) The white space on piece Xc is to be beated out. Over the ready skeleton glue piece 31 L , P. The entire model glue into the cut-out bay in piece 26. At this stage glue the stabilizor to piece 33 a L,P. The movable elements of this horizontal stabilizor fin- piece 32 glue similar as in the virtual stabilizor fin. Glue in the marked places.

WINGS

Glue the skeleton- look drawing 13. Over the ready element glue pieces 37 L,P, 40. As in the drawings glue the furnishing. Piece 39 glue as in the assembly drawing 18 and the entire element glue onto the lower surfach on the marked space. Glue the bay of the landing gear as in drawing 15. In piece XIII h P,L beat-out a hole for later put in of the main landing gear (look drawing 19). In further work check the profile and glue in the proper space piece 40 P,L. If you choose to make movable wings, cut-out earlier in a specific place on the paper. As in drawing 23 make a skeleton. Over the skeleton glue piece 40 a P,L. As in drawing 17 make ends of the wings. Check the profile of the wings and body –piece 37 a P,L , glue it in the proper place. From the bottom of the body glue the air intake – piece 37b. The propeller glue as in drawing 25. The pilot’s cock glue in proper place.

Touch- up and varnish the entire model with colourless and  matt paint.

We wish good work on constructing the model!!!
